Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Scholarship, Research and Teaching Fund strengthens Health Science Center's missions
As longtime friends of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long understand our comprehensive mission. That is why, as 2007 came to a close, Mr. and Mrs. Long made a $25 million cash gift to establish The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Scholarship, Research and Teaching Fund, an investment they know holds the promise to transform the future of health.
This exceptional endowment gift ranks among the largest cash gifts in UT System and Health Science Center history. The Long Endowment Fund is held in the Office of the President and is dedicated to advancing leading-edge research and education and important scholarships for students for generations to come. It will enable our faculty to make discoveries that alleviate the suffering of individuals with diabetes and other diseases prevalent around the world. It will ensure that, regardless of socioeconomic background, tomorrow's aspiring students-future physicians, nurses, physician assistants and biomedical scientists-will have the chance to be educated at one of the finest Health Science Centers in the United States. And it will support the retention and recruitment of superb faculty for our University, ensuring that our Health Science Center can compete to bring the best and brightest to San Antonio, supporting our vision to nurture Nobel Laureate discovery.

"Joe and Teresa, you are heroes to all of us," Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, said at a celebration of their gift. "Because of you, Texans will be healthier, and additional young people with the dream and determination to pursue health careers will have the resources to do so. Investigators seeking cures for diabetes and other diseases will have a better chance of finding those cures. And additional preeminent faculty will be recruited to teach and conduct research. Your generosity touches all of these missions."
The Long Endowment Fund changed the face of the Health Science Center by naming our central campus the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Campus. Their gift will impact the University and the world forever and make lives better.
The $25 million gift was sparked by the Longs' desire to do something more. In every area-scholarships, research and teaching-this gift seeds the pipeline of medical practice, research careers and academic medicine.
