1911: In 1911, U. T. officials began to construct wooden shacks for classrooms and laboratories. Two dozen of these unsightly one-story buildings were constructed, and it is claimed that they were left unpainted, unpapered and unheated by order of President S.E. Mezes so that Texans would be ashamed and embarrassed by their appearance and so demand more suitable accommodations from the legislature. |
1914:
On June 28, 1914, all of Europe, and eventually 32 nations were involved in World War I. The U.S. delayed entry until April 7, 1917. Raw materials of every kind, including oil, were rationed for the war effort. |
